Beer connoisseurs and casual beer drinkers alike will delight in the malty, hoppy goodness offered at the Roc City Brewfest. The current list of offerings features more than 30 different custom brews, meaning that any beer fan should be able to find a brew that he or she likes. While beer is of course the highlight of the event, this year's festival will also celebrate Mardi Grasw with live zydeco and cajun music by the Zydeco Trail Riders. And if your belly is not too full of beer, Armory Concessions will have food available.
The Roc City Brewfest will be held at the Main Street Armory (900 E. Main St.), on Saturday, February 18, with sessions 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Tickets are available for $35-$45, or $10 for designated driver tickets that include soda rather than beer. Depending on what your purpose is for attending beer festivals, watch out, you may leave this one feeling misled.
This festival, and indeed all festivals run by The Results Group, represent a fundamental change in the purpose and direction of beer events. It is true that you can pay $45 and drink all the beer you want. However, the marketing company shows little interest in the connection between craft beer's producers and the community.
In past festivals, The Results Group decided not to invite brewers local to their events, working instead with a single large distribution company that, admittedly, carries great beers, but lacks the ability to discuss those beers with festival attendees. Volunteer pourers lack knowledge and interest , and the mass-market nature of the event precludes breweries from including their really interesting stuff.
If you're looking for an all-you-can drink beer buffet, have a blast. Just don't think these festivals are there as anything more than a profitable mobile happy hour.
