Tenor, alto, and soprano saxophone may be more commonly heard, but there's something about the earthy sound of bold baritone. Brian Landrus, who specializes in the lower end of the reed family --- bari sax along with bass clarinet and bass flute --- has honed his craft playing with a wide range of greats from jazz legend Bob Brookmeyer to r&b superstars The Four Tops. The eight compositions on his group's new album, all written by Landrus, skillfully merge funk and jazz with catchy heads and chord structures ripe for improvisation. The Kaleidoscope in the group's name is apt because, aside from showcasing Landrus' prowess on a variety of instruments, the album boasts gorgeous coloration on his arrangements. Tracks like "71 & On The Road" and "Like The Wind" build beautifully with the sly, sneaky guitar riffs of Nir Felder, the rhythmic keyboard work of Michael Cain (who also plays electric bass on some cuts) and the nicely syncopated rhythm supplied by Rudy Royston on drums and Mathew Parish on acoustic bass.
