The angry right

Some Democrats are giddy about Newt Gingrich as the possible Republican nominee for president. I'm wary of him.

It's beginning to look like Gingrich's trouncing of Mitt Romney in South Carolina will lead to a victory for him in Florida - so I hope President Obama's advisors learn something from the former speaker's debate performances.

It wasn't Gingrich's much-touted debating skills that resonated with the South Carolina Republicans. It was his ability to tap into the indignation, resentment, and anger many conservatives feel toward this president.

And it would be careless to underestimate it.

Republicans are itching to let Obama have it in the most public way possible, and in Gingrich, they see someone who can do it. His scrappy grandiosity may seem ridiculous to Democrats, but many conservatives want to see Obama at the receiving end of it.

Gingrich also knows how to use media to his advantage and vilify it at the same time, something else that helps him connect with many conservatives. In two of his three most recent debates, he deftly turned the tables on veteran journalists Juan Williams and John King, making them appear to be Obama's accomplices.

Romney, with his boardroom style, doesn't feel what some conservatives feel toward Obama, and it shows.

It's doubtful that Obama can do anything at this point to change the minds of conservatives. Their anger toward him has hardened into resolve. Obama's advisors, then, shouldn't celebrate a Gingrich-Obama match. Gingrich doesn't need to rely on super PAC ads to attack the president in the most disrespectful way possible.

He already knows he has the approval of many conservatives to do it himself.
