Another Rochester neighborhood is worried it could lose its YMCA. The Southwest YMCA on Thurston Road is less than a handful of miles away from where the Collegetown YMCA would be, if that deal goes through.
A few weeks ago we reported that neighbors - worried about the proposed Collegetown facility - were mobilizing to save the Monroe Avenue Y. A spokesperson for YMCA of Greater Rochester said at the time that the Collegetown deal is still in negotiations, and that an urban service delivery study would take place before any facility closes.
The Monroe and Southwest situations are similar in that both are much smaller than the "Super Y's" that are being built these days. And neighbors in both places say that many of their Y users rely on their "neighborhood" Y and would probably not take the bus to a Collegetown facility.
City Council member Adam McFadden, who represents the South District, said at a recent meeting that it is unacceptable to remove the YMCA's resources from these communities.
