Nearly half of us want war with Iran

The draw-down of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan seems to be popular with Americans, as well it should be. But apparently that doesn't mean we've learned anything from our involvement there. Nor, apparently, have we learned anything about politicians making up excuses for invading other countries.

Many of us are still plenty trigger happy. And the next target in our sights: Iran.

A poll by The Hill earlier this week found that 49 percent of US voters think we should use military force against Iran to keep it from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

This is not idle speculation about a hypothetical issue. Some American supporters of Israel have been pushing for US military action for years. And Israel has been hinting that if we won't attack Iran, it will do it on its own.

According to a recent Washington Post article by David Ignatius, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta believes that "there is a strong likelihood" that Israel may attack Iran this spring.

And the US might very well then be drawn into the fight.

In a hundred ways, this is too horrible to imagine. And yet, politics being politics, attacking Iran may become an election issue.

And before we even start that conversation, 49 percent of us are ready for another war.

That 49% of Americans polled favor a war with Iran is not that surprising given that the majority of that figure are undoubtedly Republicans, probably the same Republicans who responded to past polls as follows:

In a Gallup poll released Dec. 17, 2010 52% of Republicans stated they believed that God created humans in their present form about 10,000 years ago.

In a poll released April 19, 2011 by Public Policy Polling 74% of Iowa Republicans stated that they don't believe or weren't sure that that Obama was born in the United Sta...tes.

In a Harris Interactive poll re;leased March 24, 2010, Republicans stated that they believed that Obama:
 is a socialist - 67%
 is a Muslim - 57%
wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a one world government - 51%
wants to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers - 41%
is doing many of the things that Hitler did - 38%
 may be the Anti-Christ - 24%
wants the terrorists to win - 22%

The question asked wasn't "do you want war with Iran," but rather "should US be willing to use military force to prevent Iran from getting nuclear weapons." But I suspect you know that.

Those that can't see the difference probably also can't see the difference between:
"Do you want to beat up that kid over there?" and "Would you be willing to punch that kid if he was threatening your little sister?

And as for those who answered the question with a YES, 28% were Democrats, probably the same Democrats who ... wait a minute ... going on in that vein was juvenile the first time.
