CORRECTION: The hearing starts at 11:30 a.m. A notice released by the task force contained the wrong time.

On Wednesday, you can tell state legislators what you think about the proposed state Assembly and Senate redistricting maps. The legislature's redistricting task force will hold a public hearing on the new plans at the Monroe County Office Building, 39 West Main Street, beginning at 10:30 a.m.

In Monroe County, elected officials, good government advocates, and neighborhood leaders have focused their criticism on the Senate districts. The city is currently divided between three Senate districts. That won't change under the proposed plan, but the districts will be reconfigured. One of the districts, the 61st, will start in suburban Buffalo and snake its way into the 19th Ward.

Critics of the Senate plan say that splitting up the city as proposed would dilute the voting power of minorities and the poor. Under the proposed plan, each of the three parts of the city is attached to a group of wealthier, predominantly white suburbs.

The proposed maps are available here. If you want to speak at the hearing, you should register in advance by calling (212) 618-1101. - Jeremy Moule
